Victor Viets passed away peacefully at Providence Portland Cancer Center surrounded by family. Victor was born July 2, 1944 in Jackson, Mich. As a boy, his father Jack Viets moved the family to various West Coast cities. Victor played the violin with the Spokane, Wash. Childrens Symphony. He received a letter in Varsity Tennis at Navato High School in Marin County, Calif. Acting on his keen interest in Engineering he entered a work-study program in the 1960s, attending UC Berkeley and San Jose State University. He was certified as a Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering in 1973, maintaining his P.E. license to the present. One of Victors first jobs was with PG&E in Calif. on a team to site Nuclear Power Plants on the Calif. Coast, which the team ultimately recommended against. Working for Woodward Clyde Consultants in Oakland, Calif. for years, he requested in 1990 to open a Portland WCC Office. He built the Environmental Engineering office from 1 person to 160, surviving several mergers and acquisitions as Office Manager until he retired from URS Greiner in 2005. He enjoyed historic car racing over a 30 year period, fixing up and driving many British cars, including MGBs, a Super 7 and a Mini BMW. Victor also enjoyed sailboat racing; cruising in British Columbia with Donna and friends in their steel trawler Pampano; and travelling to many parts of the world. Victor is lovingly remembered and survived by his wife, Donna G. Hempstead of Portland; his Mother, Marcia Viets; and his brother, Michael Viets, both of Paducah, Ky. We wish to thank Dr. Brendan Curti and his team for their care and kindness in Victors final months. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Victors memory to the Providence Portland Cancer Center, Cancer Research program. http://oregon.providence.org/our-services/p/providence-portland-medical-foundation/ For further information and online guestbook please go to www.hustadfuneralhome.com
