Steven Francis Magnett of Vancouver, Washington, died on December 16, 2024, surrounded by family.
Steve was born on June 2, 1946, in Onaga, Kansas to Adam Joseph and Mary Lucy (Ellis) Magnett. The family moved to Portland, Oregon the following summer. A graduate of Roosevelt High School in Portland, he attended Portland State University before being drafted into the U.S. Army in December 1965. He served in Korea and was honorably discharged in October 1967.
On March 25, 1972, Steve married Hendrika Geertruida Klimp. They had two children, Katie and Adam. Hendrika "Hennie" passed away after a battle with breast cancer on November 4, 1983.
Steve worked as a laborer and later transitioned to an elected Labor Representative for Laborers Local 296 (now Local 737). He spent more than 30 loyal years in the union until his retirement.
In 1990, Steve met Linda. They were married on August 12, 1992, in Hawaii with their children present. Steve and Linda were active members of the St. John's community in North Portland. They enjoyed vacationing in Mexico and Hawaii and spending time at their beach house in Ocean Park, Washington.
Among his special interests, Steve enjoyed finish carpentry projects and picking his weekly lottery numbers. In earlier years, Steve was an accomplished bowler. He later enjoyed barbecuing regardless of the weather conditions and hosting summer gatherings poolside with family and friends at home. He was known for his large collection of Hawaiian shirts that he wore to every gathering. During the holidays, he took meticulous care of and great pride in his Christmas lights and outdoor holiday decorations. Many of those decorations were handmade.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Adam and Mary Magnett; his first wife, Hendrika Magnett; his sister Loretta Gustafson and brothers Joseph, Richard, Lyle and Michael.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Magnett; daughter Katie (Brian) Flanagan; son Adam Magnett; stepdaughters Jessica (Tony) Prenni, Candace (Joe) Mason; sisters Lois (Jim) Azumano, Beatrice Magnett, Peggy (Dan) Barney; daughter in-law Jessika Magnett; ten grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was loved by everyone who had the opportunity to meet him and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on January 10, 2025, at Holy Cross Catholic Church. 5227 N. Bowdoin Street, Portland, OR 97203. Reception to follow.
Private interment will be at Skyline Memorial Gardens.
Hustad Funeral Home in Portland is entrusted with the arrangements.
