Shirley Anne Hjorten Richards known by her peers the past two years as "Miss Astoria" passed away peacefully at home Aug. 4, 2018, at the age of 83.
She was born to Inez Doyle and John Hjorten Feb. 8, 1935 in Westport, Ore., and was raised in Astoria. She married Laverle "Rich" Richards Nov. 18, 1955. They lived in Portland where they raised their three children, Randall, Jan and John.
Shirley was a homemaker who loved her home, her garden and all her roses. Raising three children she was very active with the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Portsmouth Little League. She managed the concession wagon for many years and was the first female league President.
She was an active member of Portsmouth Trinity and later St. John Lutheran Church as the Sunday School Superintendent and Youth group leader for years and loved all the little children she watched grow into adults and one day have children of their own. Shirley was the first woman to assist with communion at St. John!
Miss Astoria had a passion for history and spent 20 years at Portland Urban Tour Group teaching others about Portland's history. Her Urban Tour group says she was an awesome mentor and they loved her presence. Other favorite past times were bowling in a league with her friends and painting ceramics. She also was involved with the League of Women's Voters.
Shirley is survived by her three children, Randall Richards, Jan Richards Berndt and John Richards; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Her husband Rich passed away March 19, 2010. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
If anyone wishes to donate in Shirley Richard's name please send donations to her beloved church St. John Lutheran Church, 4227 N. Lombard St., Portland, Or 97203.
