Obituary

Ronald Wold passed away Friday, April 25, 2014 at home in Hillsboro, Oregon. He was 94 years old. Ron was born March 13, 1920 in Sulitjelma, Norway, to Odin Amandus Wold and Hilma Everina (Johansen) Wold. His mother immigrated to Tacoma, Washington in 1926, working there to earn money to help bring the rest of the family to the United States. Ron's father, sister and brothers joined her in 1928. Ron immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with his aunt and uncle in 1927, living there until 1929 when they moved to Tacoma and he was reunited with his parents. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma in 1941 and enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942. He served as a motor machinist mate, primarily in Alaskan waters, until 1946. While on temporary duty in Portland, Oregon in 1944, Ron attended an outing to an island in the Columbia River organized by the Coast Guard Auxiliary. That's where he met Lucille Dyste. They corresponded faithfully for the final two years of Ron's enlistment and were married in Tacoma, Washington shortly after his discharge. Ron and Lucille settled in Portland, and started their family there before moving to the Beaverton, Oregon area in 1950. Ron worked initially for Lomax Motors and in the early 1950's went to work for Tektronix Inc. as a technician in the cathode ray tube division where he worked until retiring in 1982. Always entrepreneurial, Ron and Lucille began selling agate jewelry at Payless in the Beaverton Mall in the late 1960's. While initially operating only during the Christmas season, the business soon developed into a full-time spot in Payless and then grew into Wold's Loft Gallery, specializing in Native American and southwestern art and jewelry. The gallery was located in the Galleria in downtown Portland, with a second location later opening near Washington Square. After retiring from the gallery business in the late 1980's, Ron and Lucille developed a nursery business from their home, raising perennials, and selling them primarily at plant shows and farmer's markets. Always gregarious, Ron loved meeting and visiting with people. He also loved gardening, especially his roses. While raising their children, the family hobby was rockhounding and vacations always involved camping trips around the Northwest to collect petrified wood, thundereggs and agate of various types. Ron prized his shop with his rock saw and grinding and polishing equipment which he used to create bookends, agate jewelry and polished specimens. After their family was grown, Ron and Lucille continued to love travelling with their travel trailer with frequent getaways to the Oregon Coast and Central Oregon. In later years, Ron developed a love for watching and feeding the native birds. Ron is survived by his loving wife, Lucille; his sons Ronald of Eugene, Gary of Beaverton, Neil of Aloha and his daughter Laurie Bucholz of Salem; nine grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Frid and Gudrun, and brothers Ralph, Gudmund, Elof and Willie. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Monday, May 5, 2014, at the r.e.a.l. life church, 5215 SE Golden Road, Hillsboro, OR 97123. Interment is at Sunset Hills Memorial Park, Portland, Oregon. Ron was a loving and devoted husband and father whose kind and loving spirit was evident to all who knew him. He cherished his family above all else and was dearly loved. He'll be missed very, very much.
