IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert Gordon
Mccullough
August 8, 1946 – October 17, 2018
Robert Gordon McCullough , also known as Bob or Gordon to friends and family, passed away on October 17, 2018 followng a short battle with cancer. Gordon passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He was 72 years old.
Gordon was born in Portland, Oregon on August 8th, 1946 to John and Dorothy (McGee) McCullough. Gordon's father passed when he was very young and he was raised by his mother mainly residing in the Alameda and Irvington areas of North East Portland, Gordon had a very colorful childhood during which time he was involved in the Boy Scouts and enjoyed the outdoors. Gordon also spent a considerable amount of time with family on the Oregon Coast, in Central Oregon and in Wyoming. Gordon attended Grant High School where he competed in wrestiling and performed with the marching band as a drummer. Gordon graduated in June of 1964 and enlisted in the United States Air Force in August of 1964 where he served in the security forces as a Security Policeman. During his time in the Air Force Gordon was stationed in England, the Phillippines and Vietnam. Gordon often reflected fondly on this time in his life and was very proud of his military service as well as the service of others.
Gordon completed his Air Force enlistment and was honorably discharged in August of 1968. After a short time living in southern Califonia following his seperation from the service Gordon returned to Portland where he would live for the remainder of his life. Upon returning to Portland, Gordon met Linda Shervey and they were wed in November of 1970. In December of 1973 Gordon and Linda purchased their home in the Prescott area of North East Portland, where Linda still resides today.
Gordon worked mainly as a welder in the Portland area working for Pacific Chain and Manufacturing, FMC, the Portland Ship Yards and Columbia Steel. This work was long, strenuous and dirty but Gordon did what he needed to provide for his family. He eventually transitioned out of the heavy labor force working as a courier and finally as a security officer for the Portland Art Museum, a job which he truly enjoyed.
Gordon was very active in scouting in the 1980's as both of his sons particpated in both Cub and Boy Scouts. He was an avid outdoorsman during this time and had a particular fondness for cooking over an open fire. This would lead him to a life of grill cooking and he hosted annual barbeques at his residence for the better part of the past decade for family and friends. While in recent years the annual barbeques were one of the highlights of the year, Gordon also loved central Oregon and always looked forward to an annual trip to Bend. Gordon took his family on many camping trips to Tumalo State Park just outside of Bend over the years. In later years camping fell by the wayside but he turned to the Bend Shilo Inn for his getaways with Linda, and on occassion with their grandchildren. Gordon maintained his love of the Oregon Coast with several trips to Lincoln City over the years. Gordon also truly enjoyed the "Happiest place on Earth," Disneyland. The family made three trips to the Magic Kingdom during the boys childhood. He and Linda took several trips to Disneyland in later years and enjoyed their experiences there together, often sharing them with the family.
Gordon was a bit of a renaissance man enjoying several aspects of life. An avid history and movie buff, Gordon also enjoyed attending several plays and concerts throughout the Portland area over the years. Gordon tried a few hobbies during his life; reading, writing short stories, model building, golf and gun collecting. None of them however held a candle to his most favorite hobby, the enjoyment of jazz music. Gordon had a profound love of jazz spending much of his time enjoying the Portland jazz scene or simply listening to his favorites in his spare time. Gordon befriended and became close with two local favorites; Jof Lee and Mel Brown, among others. Gordon was very fond of these men and spoke of them often in the highest regard.
Gordon had an ecletic personallity; flamboyant at times, a knowledge of things that would impress most college professors, never afraid to speak his mind and always willing to help a friend or family member in need. Gordon was a rough around the edges man but those who knew him apprecaited him for his directness and the committment he held to his family and his beliefs. Gordon was a fantastic story teller and able to make many people laugh. He himself had a very distinctive laugh that was quite contagious and was capable of causing laughter in its own right.
Gordon influenced many, more than he ever realized. He was a man of high charachter and he will forever be missed by those who knew him.
Gordon is survived by his wife Linda, their two sons John and Craig (Shannon), nine grandchildren and his first great-grandchild is expected in January of 2019; his brother Dennis Anderson of Seattle, father-in-law; Don Shervey, four sister's-in-law; Ronda Reynolds, Pat Shervey, Debbie Shervey and Pat Dotson, two brother's in law; Randy Shervey and Dave Reynolds, a cousin-in-law; Vicki McGee and several nieces and nephews.
