PATRICIA LOUISE DARROW Patricia Louise Darrow was born in Chico, St. Patrick's Day, 1935. The watch was taken from her wrist on November 3, 2013. Born to WWI Veteran Tony Cunha and Lois (Hamby) Cunha, Patty moved to Alameda, California with her kindly Stepfather, William N. Shoemaker and her Mother at the age of six. Throughout WWII, Patty attended Haight Grammar School, and shared a lively childhood with her many aunts, uncles, and cousins. The family worked at Pacific Bridge Shipyard. After the war, she returned to Chico to graduate from Central School and Chico Sr. High. In 1955 Patty married Gareth Rawlins, son of Coyle and Eugenia Childs of Child's Meadow, Tehama County. Raised in Chico by his Mother and stepfather, Charles Rawlins, Gareth was a 4th generation Californian and direct descendant of California's Bear Flag President, General Ide. The newlyweds built a beautiful home in Chico's newly established Stilson Canyon and had three children, Kristi, Gary and Michael Rawlins. She returned to college and graduated from Chico State University with a BA in art and anthropology. She earned a Secondary Teaching Credential and worked as a substitute teacher, teaching art fundamen-tals, and handicapped students throughout the North Valley. Divorced, she happily married Nurseryman, Robert Darrow in 1983. They celebrated the occasion by driving 10,000 miles across the United States. They settled in Los Molinos, where she opened Big Tree Antique Store, and restored an adorable antique Gypsy wagon for Granddaughter Jessica. The party wagon, and her classic '57 TBird won many awards in parades and car shows. Robert owned and operated Darrow's Nursery, and several walnut orchards. Mom worked as book-keeper. Upon his retire-ment, they returned to Chico to live on the Esplanade in an 104 year old home deemed historic by the city. Pat was passionate about her children and grandchildren. She greatly appreciated family, friends, and home. Adventurous in spirit, she aspired to "Jump into life and never hit bottom." She was a Girl Scout, Member of Phi Epsilon Epsilon Sorority, The Chico Yacht Club, and volunteered at Enloe Hospital, and The American Red Cross. With life-long wander-lust, she felt her first, wild trip to Europe was life changing. She took nine trips throughout Europe, seven to British Columbia, thirteen to Mexico, two to Asia, and covered California and The United States. She loved Venice, got stuck in a gondola high above China's Great Wall, was awed by Egypt where they slept in their guide's home, ate worms in Thailand, and enjoyed Morocco, Sicily, Japan, Korea, Great Britain, Turkey. Her memories include seeing magical places, doing amazing things, and attending eye-popping events. Although she often ended up pooped and blistered, she was always up for the next trip. Catholic, she saw Pope John at the Vatican. A Democrat, she shook hands with JFK and Ted, and flirted with her favorite, a smiling Robert Kennedy. An avid movie fan, she survived the Academy Award bleachers twice. In the early 70's, her first husband and she converted an old Chico church into an incredible, arty home. She loved life, babies, family dinners, the 60's, rock concerts, the ocean, pets, flowers, oysters, Italy, NYC, Christmas, Mardi Gras, interior-decorating, ice cream, good conversation, make-up, and her computer. Her favorite inventions were perma-nent press and indoor plumbing. An avid reader, she wrote several books. Her favorite writer was France's Collette. Feeling lucky in life, she collected art, antiques, and life experiences. She valued curiosity, humor, & loyalty. Sharing her children's lives was a lifelong priority. Her list was long, her bucket full. She sends endless love to the children she adored: Kristi Patrice Honeycutt (J.T.), Gary Patrick Rawlins, and Michael Eugene Rawlins: her beloved Grand-daughter, Jessica Nicholson, and her amazing Great-Grand-Girl Alyssa O'Neill. Survivors include her husband Robert, her brother Jimmy Shoemaker: Step-sons, Conrad (Esther), Robert (Bonnie), and Kevin (Caroline), step-daughter Carleen, four-teen stepgrand-children, many step-great-grand-children, special cousins Arlyne Pryor, Edward Kelly, school chum Barbara Peterson, and her many in-laws and shirt-tails in Idaho, Oregon, and all friends who outlived her. Sitting on a cloud, we can hear Mom now, "I miss you madly, I miss riding the world, but this, this is heaven!"
