Obituary

On August 21, 2012, Milard James Elfberg, known as "Dutch," passed away peacefully in his home with family present. He was born on April 16th 1922 in Tacoma, Washington and grew up in Salem, Oregon. After finishing high school, Dutch' moved to Seattle, Washington where he worked for Boeing until he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was a pilot of a P-47D Thunderbolt in the 513th Fighter Squadron in World War Two, during which he earned several medals, including five Bronze Stars and a Distinguished Flying Cross. He severed all over Europe in numerous campaigns including Normandy, The Battle of the Bulge and Germany. It was also during this time that Millard gained the moniker that he would carry until his passing. After the war, Dutch' became a Teamster driving trucks all around the Portland Metro Area, and after his retirement he kept himself busy by hauling and selling scrap metal and items of curiosity. He lived in St. Johns for over 60 years where he became a well known member of the community. He was a loving father to eight children from two marriages, as well as a wonderful grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also a regular at New Portland Rose Restaurant and Lounge. When asked about reading the obituaries in the paper, Dutch' would answer "I'm making sure they got my name right." He is survived by his sister Velma, his children; Robin, Nona "Cookie", M. James the second, Sandra "Lamb", Alona, Lisa, Shawn, and Colleen, and 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at Willamette National Cemetery on August 28th, 2012 at 1pm; followed by a gathering at New Portland Rose Restaurant and Lounge.
