Obituary

Lifelong Portland resident Michael Leo Maguigan passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Easter Sunday at age 53. Mike was the cherished youngest child of Helen and Leo Maguigan, who predeceased him, and the treasured "kid" brother of his seven siblings. Mike was born into the midst of a tight network of cousins and other extended family and friends where at every gathering he was the youngest child and center of attention.

He was a graduate of Holy Cross School, Roosevelt High School and University of Oregon. In high school, Mike was a leader and accomplished athlete. He served as Student Body Vice-President and Treasurer, attended Boy's State and earned several scholar athlete awards. Taking after his father Leo, who was a multi-sport PIL Hall of Fame athlete, from a young age Mike excelled in sports starting with his Little League and CYO years. He was instrumental player on a Little League All-Star team that advanced to the state tournament. At Roosevelt, Mike played on the football, basketball, baseball and golf teams, served as football and baseball Varsity team captain and earned team MVP and PIL All-Star recognitions in baseball and football. He received All-State recognition in baseball for his first base play and .415 batting average. In 1982, he was awarded the Multnomah Athletic Club Scholar Athlete Award.
Mike was a loyal member and leader of his University of Oregon SAE fraternity, where his Irish wit and charm earned him roles of Rush Chairman and Social Chairman. Post-college, Mike enjoyed a long sales career at American Linen/Alsco. In his characteristic style, he endeared himself to customers and co-workers.

Mike actively maintained many long-term friendships from all chapters of his life. He was a friend to all, making connections with an open ear and heart, and nurturing those friendships with a caring, positive attitude and simple acts of kindness. He had an expert ability to cite sports statistics and relished in analyzing and assessing any sports team or event, including his beloved Oregon Ducks.
Mike was proud of his North Portland heritage. He was raised in the same Portsmouth Avenue family home as his father Leo, which Mike's grandfather had built as an Irish immigrant. Mike was a devoted son, and in Leo and Helen's later years he was a frequent visitor and companion. He was also an engaged and enthusiastic uncle, taking genuine interest in his nieces' and nephews' pursuits and athletic endeavors, and he was a regular attendee at their local high school games. He even traveled to California to attend his nephew's state championship game. Mike cherished the five decades of lively extended family gatherings, where he served as attentive listener, storyteller, historian, sports statistician and occasional jokester.

Mike will be fondly remembered by his family and friends for his warm heart, positive nature, keen humor, ready smile and the twinkle in his blue eyes.

Survivors include his seven siblings, Tom, Tim (Rives Kistler), John (Leslie), Jim (Susan), Sue, Annie (Steve Mueller), Mary (Joe Fanelli); 10 nieces and nephews and many cousins.

Mike's family has been touched by the recent outpouring of loving remembrances from many of Mike's cousins and longtime friends. In thanksgiving for the joy and love that Mike brought into all our lives, a concelebrated Memorial Mass will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, May 31, 2019, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 5227 N. Bowdoin St., Portland, OR 97203. A reception will follow in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mike's name to Holy Cross School, 5202 N.
