Obituary

Mary Helen Smith was born in Alida, Minnesota on June 15, 1926 and passed away in hospice care in Portland, Oregon on November 9, 2015 with son Brett Smith and sister Carol Steward by her side.   Mary, her husband Delbert and their three children moved to St. Johns in 1955. She made friends quickly and soon became involved in her community, her church and local school activities. Her membership in Portsmouth Trinity Lutheran Church kept her busy as she joyfully gave of her time and energy. Mary was a kitchen assistant at Roosevelt High School until retirement. She loved her job and made many lasting friendships. She was a kind listener and the students names were seldom forgotten.  As the years passed, she would spend hours working in her yard as she loved flowers and always took pride of the colors in the spring. In later years she seldom missed a day riding the bus to downtown St Johns where she knew everyone and often met friends for coffee and had a smile for everyone.   Family was always Mary's priority and many friends became part of her family. She was "Aunt Mary" to Mike Verbout and his brothers and sisters. Mary was also involved with her grandchildren's activities. She would attend horseback lessons and competitions, music performances, and watch school and sports events. Children made Mary the happiest.   Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert O Smith in September 1983. parents Josephine and Frank Sr, brothers George, Charles and Frank, sisters Irene, Florence and her half sister Bernice.   Mary is survived by sisters Fern, Clara and Carol, daughter Blaine, sons Brett and Blair, and grandchildren Charles, Angie and Nathan.   Mary is interred at Skyline Memorial Garden. A grave side service was held on November 16, 2015. She will be missed by all her knew her.
