Obituary

Marvin Ferguson was born in 1925 in Washburn, Wisconsin to Ethyl and Ed Ferguson. He was number 3 of 8 children. At age 3 the family moved to Baudett, Minnesota where he worked on a farm instead of going to high school. He lived there until 1942 when he moved to Portland and went to work for the Vancouver shipyards. At age 17 Marvin then joined the US Navy and was stationed in California and then Portland. Marvin was a very honest man the majority of the time, but he did tell a fib about his age of 17 when he enlisted in the Navy. After that he served on the newly commissioned USS Ocklawaha and sailed on it to the South Pacific for a year. Marvin stayed in the Pacific on the USS Haskell for another year, and then a half-year on the USS Renville. Like most ex-military personnel, he remembered his time in service: 3 years, 3 months, and 3 days! Coming out of the service, he worked as a longshoreman, then moved to Tillamook, Oregon and took up logging. While in Portland in 1942, he went to a dance in Orchards, where he met Leah. Marvin said he saw her standing at the top of the stairs. That one look was all it took and his reply was "thats the girl I am going to marry". They were married on Oct. 30, 1948. They started a family which in time included Pat, Trudy, Jerry and Ty. The girls were born in Tillamook, Oregon and the boys were born in Del Norte and Salida Colorado. In 1955 Marvin and his family, along with his 2 brothers and their family, his mom, dad and sister moved to Colorado pursuing the logging industry. In 1961 Marvin's family returned to the Portland area which he pursued a career with Jantzen Knitting Mill for 25 years and retired in 1986. Marvin's hobbies included fishing, card playing, and searching for treasures of the unknown with his metal detector. For many years he volunteered running bingo at Holy Cross Church, and long time member of the Eagles Lodge. In Oct. 2011 Marvin and his wife Leah moved to Assumption Village assisted living facility. Marvin is survived by his wife Leah, children - Pat, Trudy, and Ty. Unfortunately oldest son Jerry passed away August 5, 2012, 4 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.
