Mark Allen Howell died Jan. 30, 2020, in Portland, Oregon, of complications from a stroke. He was 47. He is survived by his loving wife, Meleta (Hooley) Howell and their children Harrison, 19, and Josephine, 13, as well as his father, Arthur Howell, brother, Duane Howell, and sister, Teresa Hire. He was predeceased by his mother, Nedra Howell.

Mark was born in Portland in 1972 to Arthur Howell and Nedra (White) Howell. He was the youngest of three children. The family moved to Seattle, Washington, and then Anchorage, Alaska, but returned to Portland by Mark's second-grade year.

He graduated from Parkrose High School in 1990, where he played football and wrestled. He attended the University of Oregon for one year and then Portland State University, where he graduated in 1995 with a computer science degree.

He met Meleta in June 1990 at their summer job. They were married on July 24, 1993, in Sandy, Oregon. They had seven blissful years as "empty nesters" before their children were born. Mark loved being a father and was often more excited about the kids' Christmas presents than the kids were.

Mark worked in the software industry for various companies before joining Intel in 1999. He enjoyed his work and met many coworkers who became good friends over the years.

His hobbies include elk hunting, rooting for green-and-yellow sports teams (Ducks, Packers, and Timbers), being a dad to his two wonderful kids, and driving fun cars. He relished his role as the IT guy, handyman, and mechanic at home. He will be deeply missed.

Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020, at 2 p.m. at Hustad Funeral Home in Portland.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Mark are encouraged to make a donation to their favorite charity in his memory.
