Lois was born on March 6, 1930, in Glenfield, North Dakota, the fifth of six children of Hjalmar and Hilda Erickson. Lois lived on the family farm where she and her siblings made the daily trek down a country road to a one-room schoolhouse, even during the blustery Dakota winters. She later attended high school in Cooperstown and set pins at the local bowling alley with her friend Mae (her eventual sister-in-law), where they make a few pennies during those lean years. In 1947, Lois married William (Bill) Duffy and following his discharge from the Army at Fort Lewis, Washington, moved with their 2 week-old daughter, Sandra, to a new home in Portland. Over the years they added five more children to the family. Lois was the quintessential homemaker and raised her brood on a tight budget. Her children were her pride and joy and she made sure they were well dressed, well fed and well educated. Lois was a wonderful cook and baker and everyone eagerly anticipated the holidays when they could look forward to receiving a delicious gift form her busy kitchen. Besides baking, she enjoyed walking (everywhere!), making rag rugs, reading, and chatting with friends over coffee. Lois and Bill had a large circle of friends and would often have the best times playing cards, talking, and dancing (she especially loved the polka!). They also enjoyed traveling with others to various destinations with Reno and Tahoe being among their favorites. Long-time residents of North Portland, the Duffys lived in Assumption and Blessed Sacrament Parishes before moving to Holy Cross Parish in 1964. A convert to Catholicism, Lois lived her faith and on many evenings she gathered the family to pray the rosary. She helped out with numerous events and church committees, and was also a room-mother for many years while her children were in grade school. Lois was never happier than when rocking and singing to a baby on her lap, and thanks to her children she had an endless supply of little ones to love over the last 42 years. Lois lived a good life and has left behind a living legacy in her children and grandchildren. Lois was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Bill, and her daughter, Sandra, along with siblings, Harland, Doris and Dale. She is survived by her children Owen, Eric and Shawn Duffy, Paulette DeSeranno and Claudia Dockter along with her brothers Calvin and Leroy Erickson and their families. She also leaves 16 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
