Obituary

Larry Horn passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and children Feb. 25, 2023. He had completely come to terms with approaching the end of his life and was excited for what was to come next. He spent his final weeks happily reflecting on his life and enjoyed catching up with many friends and family members. Every day he would say that he never would have believed that dying would be so good. He was able to complete      everything he had hoped to in his life and he was truly happy.

Larry was born to Hal and Mickey Horn in 1954, which he felt was an ideal time to grow up. The first 20 years of his life witnessed an astounding variety of car styles, music, fashion, and moral standards which he felt set the tone for a very diverse and adventurous life. Growing up, "be home for dinner" was the order and he enjoyed riding bikes, playing baseball, building forts and playing guitar. In high school he enjoyed distance

running, playing music and was elected student body president with an irreverent and comical campaign. He graduated from Scappoose High School in 1973, the first class to graduate from the new high school.

He was sworn into the Portland Fire Department April 1, 1977 where he started on a training crew at Engine 23. When he got to the ladder truck he felt he had truly found his calling. Tearing things apart was his forte. He worked at several different stations as well as in the training department and as a lieutenant. He retired as a Captain in 2005.

Larry married Janice in 1980. They had four children and lived happily ever after. He had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, exploring, spending time with friends and family, playing in his band "The Wieners" for 49 years and woodworking. He will be remembered for his distinct sense of humor, his generosity and humbleness. He believed strongly in the golden rule, "Treat other people the way you want to be treated," which he lived his life by.

Larry is survived by his wife of 42 years, Janice; his four children, Chrissy, Rachael (Adam), Kim and Joe; eight grandchildren; brother, Jim (Leslie); and sisters, Kathy (Walt) and Theresa (Rick).
