L. Eugene (Gene) Barber September 25, 1932-April 30, 2012 Lawrence Eugene (Gene) Barber, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on April 30, 2012 with his family at his side. Gene was born in Portland, Oregon on September 25, 1932 to Lawrence Foster and Edna Mae (Mars) Barber. Gene lived his entire life in Portland, attending Ockley Green Elementary and Jefferson High School. He attended the University of Oregon and was later drafted and served time in Korea. He was employed for most of his career at Shaver Transportation Co., working first as a tugboat deckhand and later as a dispatcher. Gene married Joan Lee Sherman on August 31, 1957. They were blessed with three children.His childhood and teen years were spent boating on the Columbia River. His father worked as a journalist in the maritime industry and it was only natural for him to spend his free time on the water and later seek employment there. Gene took his wife, kids, and dogs out on the water often, where they would fish and swim and have cookouts. Walking the dogs in the park was a favorite pastime. Gene was an avid Trailblazer fan and he would spend many an evening watching or sleeping in front of the TV on game night. Gene will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 54 years, Joan; daughter, Catherine; son, David (Linda); son, Michael (Kari); grandson, Christopher; and granddaughter, Jessica.
