Kenneth Joseph Berning passed away in Portland on January 4, 2025. He was 81 years old.
Kenneth was born on November 16, 1944, in Scott City, Kansas, to Ludwig and Anna Berning.
He was raised in Marienthal, Kansas and graduated from high school in Scott City.
After graduating he was drafted into the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War.
Following his discharge from the military in 1969 he moved to Fremont, California where he met and married Karen Dias. While in Fremont he worked as an auto painter for General Motors.
In 1976 Kenneth moved his family to Portland, Oregon, where he has lived since. We worked for Halton Tractor and Dick Hannah Motors as an auto painter, then later as a baker at Safeway. He retired in the early 2000s.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Holy Cross Catholic Church. Kenneth was an avid gardener as well.
Kenneth is survived by his wife, Karen, his daughters: Dawn and Casey Berning and Sons: Chris, Kevin and Kelly Berning. Brothers: Jerome and Andy Berning. He has 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at Holy Cross Catholic Church,7455 N Hodge Ave, Portland, OR 97203.
A Graveside with honors will be at Willamette National Cemetery on at a future date.
