IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joyce Catherine
Esterbrook
July 2, 1932 – January 7, 2022
Our dear mom Joyce Kyle Esterbrook, aka. "Grandma Charlie", went home peacefully to heaven on Friday, January 7. 2022 at 4:05 pm. at the age of 89. She was the 3rd of 8 children born to John Colin Kyle and Anna Cincoski Kyle on July 2, 1932 in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1944 the family moved to Seattle where she graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1950. In November 1950 she married Charles Lee Esterbrook. They became the parents of 8 children, Douglas Lee, Diana Catherine, Dana Ralph, Denise Marie, Doreen Louise, Doris Anne, Dayle Joyce, and Dawn
Kyle. Joyce and Charles were married for 65 years when he passed away in August of 2016.
In 1963 the family moved to Portland when Charles was transferred by his company. Joyce remained home raising her family until the kids were
in school. Then she went to work part-time as a bookkeeper for one of the delivery branches for the Oregonian; then became a "lunch lady" for Portland Public Schools at Madison H.S., Clarendon and George Elementary Schools; then went to work for Albertson's as a bookkeeper for 14 years until she retired. She was active in Parents' Clubs, St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Genealogical Forum of Oregon, where she attended many conferences on family history. She was also a reader at Mass at Assumption and Holy Cross Catholic Churches. She loved to sew making
many of her children's clothes and later, tap dance costumes for her girls. She also made many quilts for her family and friends. She was an avid reader of non-fiction and the daily newspaper cover to cover. She even read it aloud to her house mates at Persa Care Home where she spent the last year of her life. She enjoyed many family camping trips; travels cross-country by car and train; and the highlight was a trip to Europe with her sister Therese where they cruised the Rhine and spent time in Paris. She is survived by her youngest brother Jerry Kyle, 8 children, 22
grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and 1 great, great grandchild. She was predeceased by her parents and older sisters Anne and Therese, and younger siblings James, Richard, Robert, and Jeanne. Much appreciation goes to the caregivers at Persa Care Home, Claudia, Irene, and Ala for taking such wonderful care of her this past year. Also, a special thank you to Sue Unger for the special attention she paid to mom, visiting her and bringing her communion when she was unable to attend Mass.
