John William Garner, Jr. was born on November 15, 1943 to John and Mary Garner in Deadwood, South Dakota. As a military child he moved around over 33 times while he was young. He graduated from High School in Aurora, Colorado. After High School he joined the United States Air Force where he served from 1963 to 1967. After his military service he became a motorcycle police officer in Walla Walla, Washington. Later he worked for the Seattle Police Department and then came to work at the St. Helens Police Department. John was married to Jeannette Pinson on August 20, 1977 in St. Helens. Also in 1977, John became the Chief of Police in Gearhart, Oregon. Two years later John took the position of Director of Public Safety at the University of Portland where he remained for 22 years. From 2001 to 2004 he spent time working at Linfield College before becoming the Director of Parking and Transit for Portland Community College. He retired in 2014. Throughout this time John was a Special Events Coordinator for Portland International Raceway for over 33 years. John is survived by his wife, Jeannette; His children: Ian Clanton, Tanya Garner, David Garner and Robert Garner; His mother, Mary Otto; Sisters Laureen Gunter and Lynn Garner. 8 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren. A public visitation will be on Wednesday, July 1, 2015 from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Hustad Funeral Home. A Memorial Gathering will be held at Hustad Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, July 2, 2015 at 2:00 PM. Inurnment will be private.
