Obituary

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas on June 8, 1929 to Frederick Carl Bush and Bess Bradford Brewer Bush, Jan passed away on October 10, 2017 in Portland, Oregon after a short illness. She was surrounded by her family. Her husband Sydney Lawrence (Larry) Rogow predeceased her in death.

Jan grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas. She graduated from high school in Austin, Texas which she attended while her sister Margarett Bush was a student at the University of Texas. After high school, Jan attended Barnard College in New York City where she met Larry Rogow - a Columbia University engineering student and former navy pilot. Jan graduated from Barnard in 1950 with a BA in Spanish Literature. She and Larry married in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1950, and they had two daughters - Elizabeth Nash of Potomac, Maryland and Margarett Kahl of Portland, Oregon. Jan and Larry celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on November 19, 2016.

In the early years of their marriage, Larry's work took them from Long Island, New York to Cheshire, Connecticut to Rochester, New York. They settled in Hamden, Connecticut so that Larry could pursue graduate work at the School of Art and Architecture, Yale University where he received a master's degree in city planning and traffic engineering in 1963.

When Larry returned to school, Jan began teaching. Initially she was a sixth grade classroom teacher. Soon thereafter she began to teach English as a second language in several schools in New Haven, Connecticut. During this time she completed work on her master's degree and teaching certification through Southern Connecticut State College. Jan became the assistant principal at Truman School which was the first bilingual elementary school in New Haven, Connecticut. Jan's interest in literacy and student success led her to write a grant to fund educating classroom teachers in ways to identify dyslexia at an early age.

After Jan retired, Jan and Larry sold their home in Connecticut, relocating for a few years in California. Larry's career in traffic engineering took him overseas for several long term assignments in Malaysia, the Philippines, and India, Together Jan and Larry traveled to China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Bali and Singapore. Larry also worked long term on the feasibility study for the tunnel between England and France called the Chunnel. Eventually they chose to retire in West Columbia, South Carolina.

In retirement, Jan was a docent for the Robert Mills House in Columbia, South Carolina. She was avid about the benefits of exercise, and enjoyed working out. Jan and Larry took classes at the University of South Carolina, attending theater performances and the Symphony and loved entertaining their many friends. They also enjoyed traveling to visit their grandchildren, Nathaniel, Megan, and Lisa Nash and Elizabeth, John, and Kate Kahl.

Gifts in Jan's memory can be made to Historic Columbia an organization helping to preserve Columbia and Richland County's historic and cultural heritage.
