James "Jim" E. Zimmer was born on June 28, 1933 in Portland, Oregon to Edward and Ruth Zimmer. He attended Holy Redeemer Catholic School and Jefferson High School. Jim served in the US Navy from 1950-1953 aboard the USS Curtiss AV-4 and was based in San Diego, California. He was married to Jan Cierzan in Portland on August 27, 1953. Following his discharge from the Navy, he began to work for the Oregon Humane Society where he remained for 21 years. Meanwhile, Jim and Jan also owned and operated "Zimmer's Boarding Kennel" in Northeast Portland as well as "Zimmer's Grooming Salon" on N Lombard Street. Later, Jim worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a switchman for 37 years and retired in 1994. Jim loved dog shows and was an ardent supporter of Holy Redeemer Catholic School. He was a member of the Portland Elks #142, as well as the Gateway and Baker City Elks Lodges. He was a longtime member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jan; a son, Larry (Judy) Zimmer; Daughters, Julie (Walt) Howe, Nancy (Dory) Zimmer and Katie (Steve) Milojevic. Jim has 7 grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Denny and Tom Zimmer. A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 25 N. Rosa Parks Way in Portland. Inurnment will be at Willamette National Cemetery.
