Obituary

Isaac Schmalz passed away on Friday, November 17, 2023. He was 47 years old.

Isaac was a beloved father, brother, friend, and son. He is survived by three children Fisher, Solomon, and Gabriel, and his five siblings Hannah, Melissa, Jonathan, Matthew, and Benjamin, and parents Marjorie and Robert Schmalz.

Isaac loved his children so much and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He loved the outdoors, camping, fishing, and trips to the beach. Isaac was a creative soul – a brilliant and witty writer with a dark sense of humour and an abiding love of trash talk. He was also an empathetic soul who had recently started a project raising money to take pizza and drinks to the downtown homeless community.

Isaac always threw his whole body and self into his passions. As a teenager, he was obsessed with skateboarding and loved skating at the Burnside Skatepark. As an adult, he ran the Portland Marathon and later practiced Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Isaac was an aspiring chef and proudly won the annual Schmalz Family Pie Competition in 2017.

Isaac ran a successful commercial and residential contracting business. He used his extraordinary carpentry skills to restore historical homes in the Portland area. With singular vision (literally), Isaac designed and built numerous homes and brick-and-mortar small businesses in Portland. He will be forever remembered by the beauty he left behind in his finish carpentry work.

A public memorial service in celebration of Isaac's life will be held at 3pm on Saturday, January 6th at Taborspace, 5441 SE Belmont in Portland.
