December 28, 1953 – May 29, 2018
Gary W. Hogue d ied early Tuesday morning, May 29, 2018 at 1:45 am at Providence Portland Cancer Center. He was 64 years old and a resident of the St. Johns area of Portland Oregon.
The fourth child of Marguerite Evelyn Viner Hogue and Austin Donald Hogue, Gary was born in Salinas, California on December 28, 1953. He is survived by all six of his children; Gary M., Michelle (Matthew) Ouzts, Michael (Sally), Jarom (April), John (Melissa), Joshua (Lydia) Hogue and 13 grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Becky Bartholomew, four brothers, Donald, Verlan, Austin and Dennis Hogue and his half-sister, Dortha Melton, and 29 nieces and nephews. He recently celebrated his 43rd wedding anniversary with his beloved wife, Laura. Marriage solemnized in the LDS (Mormon) Los Angeles Temple.
Gary was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints his entire life. He was a man of faith who knew upon Whom he could call in his hour of trial. Although his oncologist did not expect him to be able to survive against an extremely aggressive cancer past January of this year, his life, and improved quality of life, was mercifully extended by a loving Heavenly Father for several months. During this time he experienced dramatically less pain and suffering than would be expected in his particular situation.
Gary loved to study the scriptures and his eyes would light up with excitement when he discovered some new thought or principle. He had a talent for making things fun and for making activities feel special: momentous, significant and memorable. Gary was known for his fun sense of humor. He loved word play and puns. This is a characteristic he passed on to his family and it was quite contagious.
Gary had a deep love of music and was blessed with an exceptionally lovely voice. He performed in a number of choirs in his younger years and enjoyed listening to music c all of his life. He especially enjoyed hymns and sacred music.
Gary loved puzzles and had the patience to work on a puzzle for an extended period of time. He applied his love of puzzles to many areas of life. He developed a love of Family History at a young age and was considered by many to be an expert in Family History, especially the Hogue line. He lent his Family History talents and skills as a resource to both close and extended family members all of his life. He regularly spent many happy hours researching his ancestors and extending his family line.
Gary developed skills in a wide variety of applications and was very knowledgeable on a variety of subjects from computers to building projects, to repairs. He worked in the computer industry troubleshooting new computer designs until health issues sidelined him.
He was seriously ill for several years. In spite of pain and illness, he learned to have a wonderful spirit about him regardless of the opposition he was facing. He was an inspiration to all who knew him as they saw the courage and dignity he employed to meet the prolonged challenges of serious illness. He is greatly missed!
Funeral services were held on May 30 at the LDS chapel in the St. Johns area of Portland Oregon. Burial was at the Bethany Memorial Cemetery, 34721 Church Rd, Warren, OR, on Wednesday, June 6th. A memorial service was held at an LDS chapel in Mesa Arizona on June 11, 2018.
