IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Fred Patrick
Boyer
June 15, 1945 – December 31, 2024
Fred 'Patrick' Boyer died peacefully in his sleep shortly before midnight on December 31, 2024. Born June 15, 1945, in Elma Washington, he was the third child of Clyde and Minnie Boyer. The family moved to Portland Oregon when he was an infant. There, four more siblings were born.
From an early age, Patrick showed a talent for music. He was a bright student in elementary school but was easily bored in class, so the nuns began giving him piano lessons to challenge him. Patrick became quite accomplished on both the piano and guitar, playing for family and friends, at school, and performing with friends and brothers in local hangouts throughout his life. One summer he played the outdoor organ at the Grotto that piped music throughout the Grotto Plaza in front of the Chapel of Mary.
After graduating from Central Catholic High School, he went to the University of Portland where he earned a bachelor's degree in English. He was a popular student, making lifelong friends. He was on the tennis team and actively involved in Young Christian Students. It is at the UP that he met and fell in love with Yvonne LaRouche. They married in 1966.
After graduation the two moved to San Francisco where Patrick attended grad school earning a degree in theology while Yvonne worked as an RN in a local hospital. They shared an apartment with friends along the Golden Gate Park Panhandle just a couple of blocks from Haight and Ashbury. They moved back to Portland when Yvonne became pregnant with their first child to be closer to family. Their sons Sean and Aaron were born and raised in Portland, though there was a stint on a farm in Cottage Grove where they had a large garden and a crazy rooster that chased after visitors, and brutally pursued young Aaron on his way to the privy.
Patrick worked for the post office for a while when they moved back to Oregon, but he spent many years working in mental health at Dammasch State Hospital and as a counselor for troubled children at the Waverly Children's Home and the Edgefield Lodge for children. As it happens sometimes, their marriage did not survive. But remarkably, Yvonne remained part of the rest of his life, becoming integral in managing his care the last few years.
Patrick met Karen Saal while working as a child development therapist at Good Samaritan Hospital. They moved to Wasilla Alaska and married in 1982. Patrick did bookkeeping for his brother Clyde's firm and became involved with developing a community tennis tournament. Their son Mason was born in Alaska and their daughter Sarah was born after they returned to Oregon. Patrick shared his love of gardening with others. Karen remembers learning to garden from him when they prepared a large, prolific backyard garden. Even after moving into senior living at the Marquis Piedmont, Patrick became the resident gardener, growing vegetables and flowers along the back border of the property.
He loved riding his bike sometimes preferring cycling to work over driving. He biked Cycle Oregon, long stretches of the Pacific Coast Highway and the Seattle to Portland Bike Ride. He enjoyed the out of doors, especially going to the family cabin in Breitenbush and the Oregon coast. After he retired Patrick lived in the Taft area in southern Lincoln City for a few years.
Patrick is remembered as a wonderful musician, songwriter, poet, a creative, fun-loving Irishman who was proud to inherit an Irish sentimental bent in his nature.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, John, Dan, Mollie, and Jim. He is survived by his brother Clyde Jr. (Viv), Ireland and his sister Judi (Duffy), Portland; his sons Sean (Lina), Aaron (Vera) and Mason and his daughter Sarah; 8 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren, dozens of nieces and nephews, and former wives Yvonne and Karen. A celebration of life is being planned for this summer.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest a donation to a charity of your choice supporting the causes of Alzheimer's or mental health.
