Obituary

Elene Planchon died peacefully in her son's Portland Oregon home surrounded by family. She was born in Chiloquin Oregon to Walter and Mearle Pohll. She left Chiloquin at age 18 to live with her older brother Norman and his wife Mary in Sacramento, where she intended to continue her education. Her plans changed one night when she met Clifford Planchon at a dance. They were married in Chiloquin four months later, sharing a wealth of experiences for the next sixty-six years. The first three years of their marriage was spent in a 20-foot trailer, traveling from work site to work site for Cliff's employer Pacific Bell Telephone. They eventually settled in Menlo Park California, living in the same house for the next 63 years, where Elene and Cliff raised three sons. Elene was the embodiment of unconditional love, always showing up when someone needed help, when something was being celebrated or when a special grief needed loving attention. Her loving and caring manner was legendary throughout her wide circle of family, friends and neighbors. She enjoyed camping, sewing (famous for her clothes and costumes), dancing, cooking, gardening, making crafts for family and friends (many considered collector's items), holding babies and being around young children, watching squirrels and birds in her backyard and reading. Her determination to be part of all of her grandchildrens' lives was clearly demonstrated by their regular trips to Alaska, where two of her grandchildren lived, with one of those trips requiring a small bush plane to get to a remote homestead on the Yukon River. She remembered everyone's birthday without the benefit of calendars or smart phones and sent greeting cards for all occasions; if it was a special day for you a card would be in your mail box from Elene, many times with a check inside. When news needed to be spread to family and friends, Elene went to work, making calls and sending emails to her extensive contact list. And, she was devoted to her husband Cliff, through good and bad times, as promised on their wedding day. Elene was preceded in death by her son Glenn, who always held a special place in her heart, and by her brothers Norman, George and Louis. She is survived by: her husband Cliff; her sons Doug (Lynn) and Steve (Shannon); her sister Alice Wampler and her husband Bob; her brother Bill Pohll and his wife Mary; her four grand children, Cody Planchon, Casey Planchon (Deseree), Meghan Planchon and Ian Planchon (Lynn); her nephews and nieces Tony Planchon (Sharon), Mike Wampler (Mona), Joe Wampler, Scott Wampler (Sandi), Kristi Strizich (Mike),Stacey Pohll (Kathi), Marty Pohll (Nancy), Marilee Marcoui (Ed), Bobby Pohll and Terry Pohll, all who were like sons and daughters to her. She cherished her six great grandchildren Dean, Memphis, Maximus, Claudette, Jack and Aubrey Planchon. Memorial gatherings will be held with family and friends in Oregon and California at later dates. If inclined, please consider remembering Elene with a donation to a hospice organization or local charity in your community.
