Obituary

Edward Valentine Greisen passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on March 31st in Portland, Oregon. He was 95 years old and a resident of Scappoose, Oregon for the past 47 years.

He was born on April 15, 1922 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Michael Bernard Greisen and Rose Mary Meyer; the 3rd oldest of 11 children. About 1926, the family moved to Dickinson, North Dakota; they later moved to the Yakima Valley in Washington about 1939.   He joined the Navy during World War II and was an Aviation Radioman on a Curtiss Helldiver bomber aboard the USS Yorktown Aircraft Carrier.  He received two Air Medals, two Distinguish Flying Crosses, and various campaign citations.

While in the Navy, he married Virginia Jane Stevens on April 12, 1945.  In 1950 they settled in the Portland area, where he worked different jobs until he was hired as a switchman for the Portland Terminal Railroad, retiring from there after 33 years.  He always held part time jobs to provide for the family: working in wood shake mills, remodeling kitchens or homes, custodian for the Hillsboro Airport traffic control tower, and as a partner at Greisen's Department Store in Scappoose.

Ed was very involved in his church with maintenance projects and operating the Scappoose Food Bank at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.  He always had the family helping with these projects.  He was a strong supporter of the youth in the Parish, especially the annual Steubenville Northwest Youth Trip. Listening to the Church Youth Choir brought him great joy.

Ed is survived by his 8 children: Ronald Greisen (Tona) Tacoma Washington, Diane Larson (Mike Larson deceased) of Warren Oregon, Vicky Greisen (George Chonin) of Bothell Washington, Michael Greisen (Mary) of Scappoose, Robert Greisen (Dawn Sperry) of Heppner Oregon, Janell Greisen of Scappoose, Janet Cook (Jim) of Cathedral City California,  and Douglas Greisen (Michelle) of Scappoose.  Ed had 19 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.  He is also survived by his siblings Richard Greisen of Portland Oregon, Bernard Greisen (Joyce) of Vancouver Washington, Loretta Taggart of Milwaukie Oregon, and Irene Ness of Portland Oregon.

He was predeceased in death by his wife Virginia Greisen, his parents, his brothers Herbert Greisen, Roy Greisen, Ervin Greisen and sisters Florence Flack, Bernice Piperno, and Viola Huff.

Funeral Services for Edward Greisen will be Saturday, April 14, 2018 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, 51555 SW Old Portland Road, Scappoose, Oregon 97056.  There will be a Rosary at 10:30 am, Funeral Mass at 11:00 am, and internment with military honors at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donation to either the St. Wenceslaus St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank or the St Wenceslaus Steubenville NW Youth Trip.  Checks may be mailed to the church address above.
