Obituary

Douglas James Spangle passed away in his home the second week of August due to complications from coronavirus.

Doug Spangle was born in Portland, Oregon on November 21st, 1951 to parents Ben and Sharon Spangle. Doug spent his childhood enjoying and exploring St Johns, Sauvie Island and other surrounding areas. He attended James John Elementary School and Roosevelt High School before serving in the United States Marine Corps. He was on active duty from 1969 until 1972. His service included a tour in Vietnam as a Radio Telephone Operator before continuing to serve in the Marine Corps Reserve for three more years. Doug was honorably discharged in 1975 as a Lance Corporal with many decorations including the Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Rifle Marksman Badge.

After his service Doug explored different careers in manufacturing before retiring from the City of Tigard as a valued employee.

Since his youth Doug was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hiking, fishing, rafting, photography and hunting. His adventures took him to every corner of Oregon where he would find beauty and peace in the vast landscapes and in the smallest details that lay within them. In nature he found inspiration for the many crafts he enjoyed including woodworking, bow making, bird house crafting and bringing to life beautiful and whimsical creations from unique pieces of wood and precious rocks.

Doug's generosity extended beyond his friends and family. He donated regularly to various charities including Guiding Eyes for the Blind, American Bible Society and The Heritage Foundation. For years he proudly donated life saving blood and platelets for the American Red Cross.

Doug was loved and appreciated by friends and family. His wealth of knowledge, belly shaking stories and light-hearted pranks will be forever remembered and deeply missed.

"The mountains are calling and I must go."

-John Muir

"Walk away quietly in any direction and taste the freedom of the mountaineer. Camp out among the grasses and gentians of glacial meadows, in craggy garden nooks full of nature's darlings. Climb the mountains and get their good tidings, Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees."

-John Muir

Doug is survived by his sister Shawn Looney and was preceded in death by his parents Ben and Sharon Spangle.

A memorial service for Doug will be held on Saturday October 9th at 11 am at Willow Bar Beach located on Reeder Road on Sauvie Island in Portland Oregon.
