Obituary

Dorothy Jean (Nelson) Deane was born on January 20, 1931, in Portland , Oregon to Irving and Delilah Nelson. She was the only girl in the family with three brothers - Jack, Richard and Gordon all now deceased. Dorothy attended Portsmouth grade school and graduated from Roosevelt High School. Her Sophomore and Junior year were spent in Ketchikan, Alaska with her Aunt Fern Russell, a prominent figure in her life. After high school Dorothy attended Oregon State University for one year. She then worked at US Bank in St. Johns. Dorothy met Ken through her brother Richard, and they were married June 1, 1956. Ken and Dorothy had two children - Jim and Kathy. She was a very loving and devoted mother. In fact, one of Dorothy's defining traits was that of caregiver. She cared for her Aunt Fern as an invalid in Ken and Dorothy's home for 8 years. She also cared for each of her grandchildren several days a week from infancy to school age. She was active in her church throughout her life with bible studies as well as organizing the funeral meals at the St. Johns Christian Church during her membership there. She loved to play bridge and had a great time playing for many years with a group of ladies in her University Park neighborhood. Dorothy and Ken took several major trips including an Alaskan cruise and land trip to see her childhood home there. They went to Cancun, Mexico, as well as cruised the Caribbean. Jim and Kathy's childhood was filled with family camping trips with the Neffendorf's and the Hagars. Baseball filled the summers as Jim's team traveled across the Pacific Northwest. Dorothy is survived by her husband - Kenneth Deane; her children - James Deane (wife Vickie), and Kathryn Witt (husband MIke); her grandchildren - Brian and Michelle Witt, Tiffanie Hockett (husband Cole) and Aaron Deane (wife Taryn); and her great-grandchildren - Jordan and Cameron Hockett.
