Obituary

On the morning of May 13th. 2013, Donald "Don" J. Lehman passed away peacefully at the Veterans Care Facility in Vancouver, Washington. He was 87 years old. The youngest of five children, Don was born in Clarkston, Washington on July 24, 1925 to George and Beulah Lehman. He was raised on his parents' berry farm in North Portland. Don was introduced to his wife Bonnie by his long time friend, Gene King, who also happened to be Bonnie's brother! Don was drafted into the United States Army on September 20, 1943 where he fought in the Battle of Normandy. He was wounded in action on June 21, 1944 and again on February 11, 1945. Don was honorably discharged from the Army on November 4, 1945. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, European African-Middle Eastern Service Medal and The Purple Heart. Don and Bonnie were married in May 1945. Don worked as a mechanic for several years before becoming a sheet metal worker for Local #16. He retired in 1988. Upon retirement, he worked part-time for his son-in-law in the construction business. Don was a lover of baseball and a devoted follower of the Seattle Mariners. He even coached and managed Little League and Pony League Baseball Teams for Pier Park in North Portland. He also took pleasure in camping, fishing, travelling and country music. Don was an avid pigeon fancier most of his life and was quite active in the pigeon community. His birds brought him great joy, many awards including the Birmingham Roller Club's Hall of Fame in 1998, and lifetime friendships over the years. He was an active member in the American Roller Club. Don is survived by his wife of 68 years, three sons, Donald, Dennis, David, and one daughter Becky Pappenheim, all of Portland Oregon, and his sister Naoma Edel, of Wilsonville, Oregon, six grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Roy and Jim Lehman, his sister Mona Luman and a granddaughter Chrisie Potter. Don will be laid to rest by private interment at Willamette National Cemetery, June 5th, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. A celebration to honor Donald's life will be held June 8th, 2013 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at their home.
