Obituary

Dean Oten passed away Friday, July 10, 2026. Dean was born April 26,1954 along with his twin, David Oten in Portland, Oregon to parents, George and Little Mae Oten. Both of his parents preceded him in death as well as brothers, Ronald, Calvin and David Oten. Dean is survived by his sister, Erma Oten, Salt Lake City, Utah. It is important to note that Dean’s only child, Jayson Dean Oten, passed August 4, 2026. Dean is survived by grandchildren, Brenton Oten and Carlin Oten and nieces and nephews.

Dean was a proud member of the Columbia Boy’s Club for many years and was involved in the comradery the Boy’s Club afforded him and his North Portland friends. He was a heavy hitter in many sports and if Dean put his hand on your shoulder you felt as though a 2 ton weight had been added to your body weight.

Dean’s professional life was centered around floor coverings of all types. He worked for many years for Resilient Flooring with Fred and Harold. He moved up through the ranks at their company and became a supervisor for several years. Dean was a jack of all trades. If he didn’t know how to do it, he could certainly figure it out and produce a product you could be proud of. He had a tool for every situation. If he couldn’t fix it, nobody could.

His loved sports and watching sports was at the top of his list. His home always had every sports channel available. Dean loved Saquon Barkley. He spoke about him often among so many other NFL players. He loved to play softball and mush ball – his team name at one time was Love Train… fancy that! Dean was very strong-willed. He set his mind to something and it was hard to deter him.

Dean will be remembered for his hearty laugh, his big smile and those twinkly eyes, which signified a bit of mischief was afoot. He loved gardening as was evidenced by the raised flower beds in the backyard. He had planted tomatoes, strawberries and other plants, as late as this spring.

A very special thank you to Terry Malone along with his wife, Paula. Without them, Dean would have floundered for these past two years as he so valiantly fought his battle with colon cancer. We wish to thank Terry and Paula for all they have done for Dean and the Oten family. There are not enough words to express the gratitude and appreciation to Terry and Paula with how deeply our family’s love goes out to these two special friends. Other friends which should be included are David Harris and Willie McCoy.
