Obituary

Cliff Planchon, husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and World War II Marine, passed away on July 5th. He will be missed deeply by his family and many friends. Cliff was born in San Francisco to Edith and Herbert Planchon. He moved to Sacramento California prior to World War II and joined the Marines a short time later. Cliff was among the first Marines landing on the beaches of Iwo Jima and was with the first occupation troops in Nagasaki Japan. When he returned from the war Cliff met Elene Pohll from Chiloquin Oregon at a dance. They were married in Oregon four months later, sharing a wealth of experiences for the next sixty-six years. The first three years of their marriage was spent in a 20-foot trailer, traveling from work site to work site for Cliff's employer of over forty years, Pacific Bell Telephone. They eventually settled in Menlo Park California, living in the same house for the next 63 years, where they raised three sons. Cliff loved spending time with family and friends, camping (especially at Standish Hickey), traveling, playing cards, telling stories and reading books (the bigger the better). His neighbors could always count on him to help, especially when it came to catching and re-locating neighborhood squirrels. Most importantly, Cliff loved his wife Elene. Together, they were well known for always showing up when someone needed help, when something was being celebrated or when a special grief needed loving attention. Elene died on April 17, 2013, leaving a large void in his life. Cliff was preceded in death by his wife Elene and his son Glenn. He is survived by: his sons Doug (Lynn) and Steve (Shannon); his brother Mel; his sister-in-law Alice (Bob); his brother-in-law Bill Pohll (Mary); his four grandchildren, Cody Planchon, Casey Planchon (Deseree), Meghan Planchon and Ian Planchon (Lynn); his nephews and nieces Tony Planchon (Sharon), Mike Wampler (Mona), Joe Wampler, Scott Wampler (Sandi), Kristi Strizich (Mike), Stacey Pohll (Kathi), Marty Pohll (Nancy), Marilee Marcoui (Ed), Bobby Pohll and Terry Pohll; and his six great grandchildren Dean, Memphis, Maximus, Claudette, Jack and Aubrey Planchon. The Belmont Trailer Club has organized a celebration of life pot luck picnic in Cliff's honor Wednesday, July 17, at Flood Park in Menlo Park, from Noon to 3pm. Picnic information and RSVP @ 650-366-7534 or loubamberger@gmail.com. Interment will be at a later date.
